Sneedville Campaign

 Working the Army of the Pines to retake Sneedville.

Based on the Knoxville campaign plan Hey Diddle Diddle, I provided three courses of action for General Stiner;

1-2 Secure Parkey Gap and Rebel Hollow to deny Commander Patton and his Jones' Army the ability to advance west from Sneedsville.

3-4 Secure Riley Church and establish a forward staging area to retake Sneedsville.

5-6 Hold the crossroads south of Hopewell Bridge to deny rapid access to Tazewell and Cumberland Gap.

I rolled a two and issued the following order;

Rapidly deploy the horse regiments from Harrogate and the combined Sneedville, Bean Station regiment (minus) to secure Parkey Gap. Follow on with the remainder of the Army of the Pines to reinforce the position and deny Jones' Army access through the gap.  Be prepared to advance on Sneedville on order.

The Kingsport campaign plan Second Wind drives the armies deeper into Knoxville with Jones' Army tasked with securing the Cumberland Gap.

1-2 Secure the Hopewell Bridge to provide primary route through Harrogate and on to the Cumberland Gap.

3-4 Secure the Hopewell Bridge Crossroads to prevent line of retreat or advance from Tazewell and Harrogate.

5-6 Secure the Riley Church and establish a forward staging area for final advance against Cumberland Gap.

I rolled a four and issued the following order;

Advance with haste to secure the Hopewell Bridge Crossroads and secure the rear flank of Tazewell preventing reinforcements from Harrogate and stopping any retreating troops from Tazewell.  On order be prepared to advance on Harrogate and take the Cumberland Gap once Tazewell is secured.

Doing the map movements I place the horse at the Parkey Gap in one turn and the '450' and Jones' Army at a turn and a half.  The rest of the Army of the Pines arrive at turn two, to represent this I'll start reinforcement arrival rolls at the end of turn two. Since the Jones' Army is moving rapidly they will be in column of march and the Knoxville forces will be have time to have arrayed across the opening of the gap, and place some obstacles along the road to slow up the Kingsportians.

  1. Interesting that you've got the Orphans (the 450) arriving later than I do. Did you march them solely by way of the semi-improved roads? Because the direct route from Tazewell to Hopewell Bridge is only about ten miles, and from there it's another 15-20 miles to Sneedville. When I ran this, I had the Orphans with time to prepare some field defenses.

    1. They are deploying their battle lines further to the east to secure Parkey Gap based on what I rolled. Parkey Gap is where the road turns north about 14 miles equidistant from Chucksville and Tazewell. For sure they could have held the church or the crossroads with the weight of forces. Now they're on the offensive will join the cavalry units and try to hold the gap until reinforcements arrive.
